We will never really know how good a coach he is - and could he have won without cheating will plague his reputation for years.

Now we will wonder when he started cheating.

Including did he cheat when working with the Tuna to get Super Bowl rings for other teams? And if he did, does that mean the Tuna also cheated?

Despite what some Patriot backers say to this question, nobody will ever know.
Chances are they would have. Bellicheck is one of the greatest coaches of all time, and they have had some great teams.
That being said, this is what makes cheating such a bad deal.

Once you have been caught, your integrity is forever compromised. It is clear that this was not a one-time event, and now anyone can legitimately question past practice and results.
Who is to say he didn't cheat in other ways? You just don't know. Who is to say he isn't still cheating in other ways? Again, once you have been caught, no way to know.

There is a fundamental difference between capitalizing on others mistakes within the rules, such as reading lips on a coach that doesn't cover them, and blatantly violating a clear NFL rule against videotaping signals from the sideline. Teams don't prepare for someone breaking the rules that way, and they are left unguarded.
NOw that Bellicheck has been caught doing it, you just can't honestly defend him as to other occasions. His integrity is forever lost.
This is really a shame, because Bellicheck's accomplishments are now irretrievably tarnished, and there is no way to rehabilitate them. Despite the remote likelihood that Bellicheck's rulebreaking tipped the scales, questions will now always linger. No way to change that.

I am SO GLAD that the Patriots were caught cheating! Because this finally answers the age-old question... Does ANYONE try to steal signals in the NFL??? Now we have the answer...ONLY the Patriots do it! Let's fry them!

C'mon, people. The Patriots are not the only team to do it, they're the only team to get caught. Someone said that the Patriots will have the upper hand on all the teams until they change coaches...do you think for one second that every team that the Patriots face this season will NOT be changing signals, for fear that they were taped? Or does EVERY TEAM change signals, for fear that they were taped by other teams?

Yes, I'm a Patriots fan, but more importantly, I'm a fan of the NFL. The Patriots got caught and were punished. Now, can we just get back to watching FOOTBALL???

Just my $.02.

I think that this Jets incident is only the tip of the iceberg because the league investigation into Belichick's library of similar videos is ongoing.

However, I don't for a moment believe that these illegally obtained videos had anything whatsoever to do with their championships because their championships were largely won on the back of the defense, not the offense, so any recording of defensive signals would not alter the outcome.

Having said that, if you were to suggest that someone from MIT had cracked the headphone encryption I wouldn't be completely shocked but frankly I don't want to know about it.

I want to enjoy good football on the field and not a bunch of carping accusations from jealous teams. I'm sick of off-field controversies this year.

The Patriots won their championships by being the better team. The fact that their coaching staff is paranoid and insecure should not in any way detract from this achievement.

There's no question Bill would've won those super bowls, I'm sick and tired of hearing about this whole deal about cheating. Any team in the NFL that denies to have ever attempted reading the opposing team's defensive signals to gain an advantage is a darn lier, the media is only blowing this up because is the Patriots... also consider the fact that signals are constantly change during games, for the simple fact that they already know someone may be watching.
If Bill could speak his mind without the public judging him and using everything he says against him, Bill would tell you the whole truth about cheating in the NFL, not that anyone should be surprised...

the league is to blame for the patsies cheating they have encouraged it since the tuck rule game, the league has helped the patsies with their shamful superbowl wins they shouldent even have gotten to their first one but thanks to the "tuck rule game" they made it they also changed the rules for pass interferance thanks to the patsies holding of recievers 10 or 15 yards down the field it was dubbed the patriot rule but the only team who dident have the patriot rule inforced was the patsies, what a joke i have been watching nfl football since the late 60s and i have never seen anything like what surrounds the patsie franchise its disgustion and a slap in the face to all the rest of the teams and the fans the nfl is fixed and the patsies prove it everytime they step on the field goodell is in the pocket of the patsies thats why the slap on the wrist for cheating its a joke

The sad thing is that NOBODY knows how long this has been going on! This is the first time he actually got caught! He was accussed before, but never caught.
Think about this: Belichick did this against a far less of a team, a team that he knew he could destroy, but still he did this. He also did this against one of his ex coaches, that knew he did this. So Belichick "cheated" against a team that he was more superior than and against a coach that used to coach with him and knew he was doing this. SO.... if he would do this under these circumstances, he would defenitely do this against ANYONE and EVERYONE!!!
Belichick got off easy on this one. Yes, he got fines 500k, big deal! He's lucky the league do more than just dig into his pocket.
But would he have won any Super Bowls if he didn't cheat?
Nobody knows. That's why I say, I can't look at this team the same EVER again....

It's impossible to say. They obvously thought it was giving them an advantage or they wouldn't have been doing it.

All three of their Super Bowls were won by 3 pts, two on last second FG drives. It would only take a small advantage, gotten illegally, to influence games that close.

Until they come totally clean on how they were using their illegal films, I think their SB wins will always have the tint of suspicion on them.

That question may yet be answered: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/09/16/mmqb/index.html

Apparently Mr. Goodell isn't finished going through the Patriots video archives. He may find more damning evidence, maybe he won't. Who really knows but Bellichick?

no, I'm amazed he is allowed to stay in football at all. If you know the other teams plays you can always counteract them. This is dishonesty at its worst. He should be thrown out of the sport and not able to play or coach at any level.
