I'm currently selling buy it now items on ebay. I spend quite a lot on fees so was just wondering whether it would be cheaper to open an ebay shop instead. Can anyone tell me what the financial advantages of opening an ebay shop are? thanks

Jen - not much advantage I am afraid. I have a shop on ebay - I list things in my shop and then also have them listed on the ordinary buy now listing. If you only list things in your shop - they DO NOT appear in the general search listings so your items will not be seen unless someone enters your shop which unless the know your user ID is not going to happen. As a shopper on ebay, I tend to go into the shop when I have seen something on a general listing and am interested to know what else they sell.

In terms of costs, the listing fee is much much cheaper in the shop however the final fee is much higher. Conversely, on a normal buy it now listing outside of the shop, the listing fee is higher and the completion fee is lower. I have done a detailed cost of exactly how much it costs to sell one of my items in my shop and then on a normal listing and it works out almost identical. My fees are really high too!

So in summary, I have found that you have to have the item listed twice, in the shop and on a normal buy it now/fixed price listing. That said, my sales have gone up and a high proportion of my sales are from my shop.

You could of course set up a simple website independently of Ebay and have a link on there to your ebay shop. I plan to do this but haven't got around to it yet as I also work full time!!!

Store items are MUCH less on fees. 2¢ to list for a month and 1¢ gallery pic. 3¢ for a great listing. (Also a 17.95 monthly fee.) Final Value Fee is higher by percentage, but if you sell more then it usually works out better to sell from your store. If you're doing a lot, a store is a great way to get many items out there. Only problem is that store listings do not always show up in a search.

The best way around this is to put 90% of your items in your store and run a handful of auctions each week which then mention your store. This is the biggest mistake that store owners make. They feel that once they open an Ebay Store that they no longer need to do auction style listings.

In addition, stay away from the extras. Bold title, featured listings, even the second category and subtitle are more money than you need to spend on regular auction listings. (Don't bother with the BIN unless you truley want to.)

Remember that the Auction Listings are there more to direct people to your STORE than to actually sell, so you may as well save a few cents on each one.

NOTE to RETOX: Ebay will not let you put a link to your own site in your listings. You cannot have a link on your listings to any site which is NON Ebay related. You CAN put such a link on your MePage and then mention the link in your auctions, but the link itself cannot be actually found in the auctions. You can't even put the URL without a hot link.

I found it cost me more to have a shop... You dont get as much coverage either as if you just sell in your shop your listings do not show on the mainstream pages so people will only find your items if they appear at the bottom of a general search (the bit that says similar items available in shops) or if people chose to search in shops.x
