In my backyard, I have two sizable wild cherry trees which need felled. While I am having the tree company leave the wood behind, I am at a loss as to what should be done with the wood. Some of the wood I will save to use for smoking chips for BBQ. But, two tree worth of chips seems excessive. I suck at word working, but it would be nice to have something made from the wood, perhaps to be used as wood flooring. Or perhaps carve the wood into ornamental pieces ... would that be a waste? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Leave it in long 8 foot logs if possible, then find someone to buy the wood from you. If you have enough wood, you might get someone to build something smallish for you, end tables or the such, in return for the rest of the wood.

As was pointed out, cherry is an expensive wood, a hard wood. Most of the uses mentioned don't sound appropriate for it. I've never heard of it used as smoking chips, and that may actually ruin the taste of the food. (Mesquite is one wood I frequently see used for culinary purposes.) If you can afford it, I would hire a professional to make an heirloom piece of furniture. There will then be a story behind it that doesn't come with anything store bought.

To begin with cherry wood is an expensive wood. After getting your chips for bar-b-queing have it cut into lumber and stored for seasoning or have it kiln dried. Save some for your own personal use or enjoyment (ie; wood flooring, beautiful furniture, or as you said ornamental pieces.) then you could sell the rest. Be sure to get some crouch wood boards for your self as they are beautiful. Good Luck and enjoy!!

oh, don't let that go to waste!!!.... my son's tree was cut into managable chunks and then left to age.... then hubby started with a simple idea, that of candle holders.... just a slice of the wood, with holes drilled out for tea lights....like this...

then we got into slabs of it, to use as backing for porcelain gimcrackies, or 'stands' for tea cups and saucers and such....don't have to do much more than just route the edges in a pretty shape.... ah, the smell in the woodshop is wonderful while working with the cherry.... keep a few logs for the hearth, too!.. or the firepit!.... but stack that stuff and let it age out.... find then, a sawmill that will cut it into boards for you.... I'm sure you'll find it's perfect use then!!!... like panels atop a fireplace wall?... or for the base of a kitchen island?... maybe a simple blanket chest or bench?.......oh, it will come.................
