Like say , Grama: , how do you know its pullinga ? why not sthrilinga or napumsakalinga ?

I will give you a rule for finding the gender of basic words in Sanskrit. There are exceptions to this rule.

Pullinga - The words usually end with a visarga(:)
eg. rama:, grama:, deva:, etc.

Sthrilinga - They usually end with a long vowel (aa, ee)
eg. seetaa, Malaa, nadhee

Napumsakalinga - The words usually end with an anuswara(the 'm' sound)
eg. pustakam, jalam, netram, etc.
