Die casting can be done with a variety of metals. I'm familiar with pancake dies. A flap in the shape of the stamp-out is sawn in a mild steel blank. The blank is then heat-hardened. A sheet of silver (copper, aluminum, brass, etc.) is slid under the flap and the die is then squeezed in a vise or die press, thus stamping out the desired shape. Thassall I know.....
