I am planning on attending the University of Texas next year Fall 2008. I am moving from Kansas City, KS and I just want to know about the college, the campus life, and the city of Austin in general. If you could give me some advice or tips that would be great.

Tuition is being paid for by a third party.

I attended UT as a Graduate Student and my sister attended for both her BA and her MA. I have to reiterate what MJ3000 had to say.

It is a large state university. If you are OK with that, then this is a great school. Underclassmen classes are large and impersonal, but there is always opportunity to talk to Professors (I know from being an instructor that very few students go to office hours, and profs/TAs are happy to have someone stop by) and to take smaller classes when you are an upper classman.

But, since it is a large university, it also means you will meet tons of people and make great friends. There will be events to attend and student organizations to join. You make the experience whatever you want to make it. You can squeak through anonymously or be involved and shine.

Austin is also a great place. The weather is nice. Hot in the summers. Temperate the rest of the time. "Do" the bar and party scene once or twice, but to really enjoy the city, get outside.

I loved UT (class of '98) despite some of the negatives that some people focus on.

Yes, first year undergrad classes can be huge. Yes, you may feel like a number in the beginning.

If you get to know the professors during their office hours, none of that is a problem. If you study (that's why you're going), none of that is a problem.

Aside from studying, Austin is a great town. It's a liberal island in a conservative state. Lots to do: clubs, bars, outdoor activities, intramural sports, museums...

UT is huge.

there are lots of kids from other countries that like to do nothing but keep their noses in books and destroy any hope of a curve.

the basic class can get to 400 people or so. The profs have other interests much of the time.

There are some cut throat students there...

Almost half of UT students never graduate.

other than that, I learned a lot and had fun.

I wish I would have gone to another school however.

I take my hat off to anyone that put themselves through UT.

Austin is a great city, but not worth paying out of state tuition for.

It's Texas. It should be pretty self-explanatory. It's going to suck.
