Obviously the best way to save the environment is to reuse the cartridge as it is now. Don't forget that HP printers tell you to change the cartridge long before you actually have to.
If the cartridge is actually empty, get it refilled. No point throwing it away as landfill, and buying a replacement, unless the metal connections are faulty.
In the meantime, you might want to think about whether you actually need to print off everything you do, as it's a very expensive habit, and 99% of it is pure waste.
I've even taught my 3-year old to use MSPaint instead of printing things out and colouring them in all the time - obviously it's good for her to do both, and better for the environment, too.
Great, now I'm back off to my campervan to go wear charity-shop clothing and live in my own refuse.

There are many outlets that will recycle printer cartridges for you. Best ask at the place you bought the original ones (or printer) from.
If you wish to have them refilled, about 80% of the time they work. The rest of the time is ugly.

Better to reuse it, before it is recycled, take it to somewhere like Cartridge World, they are mostly plastic, and once they can no longer be filled, it is very difficult to recycle them as there are so many types of plastic, whuich are not compatible.

I have found the cheapest way is to refill the ink myself, you can get little kits for both colour and black inks, it is fairly simple and it saves you having to go in to town every time you want to have them refilled, if you prepare well then there is no problem filling them up for yourself, i would advise a pair of gloves and a news paper to put everything on while you refill but if you are careful it can be done with little fuss!

Refilling the toner or the inks or if you are using a dot matrix printer, replace the ribbon or get it reinked.
