"G'day!" and smile, whatever the time of day or night. We're inclined to laconic in Oz. "Good morning" and "Good afternoon" are reserved for people we don't give two hoots about. But the American "Hi" is creeping into the language, sadly. It makes me move aside in fear of a squirt of chewing tobacco. My first language is a wave of the hands and a grin. But I learned English at a very young age, and became quite fluent in it. It's a pity more so-called English-speakers don't use it. Especially as I know no other.

Now that you have brought it up I wonder why we don't have any version of 'good morning' in my native Punjabi? We simply wish each other with a 'sat sri akal' on every occasion whenever we meet. In the mornings youngsters are supposed to touch elders feet and take their blessings but that is fading out and is being replaced with 'good morning' in modern educated households. I do feel sad for the loss of our culture but such is the tide you flow with it...

English/Inglés: Good morning! :oD
Spanish/Español: ¡Buenos días! ;o)
I am from California, but currently living in Utah.
My first language was Spanish, but many people don't know that. English is now my primary language. I also know a little bit of American Sign Language.

Is there coffee on yet? Everyone is fine with that. After we know it is on the way, some effort is made to do the "Good morning! Did you sleep well last night?"
