Since we exist there is no reason to think we are alone. As the universe is so huge with countless stars with planets there has to be other life forms. As the age of the universe is approx 13.7 billion years and the earth is 3.5 billion years. It has taken 3.5 billion yrs to create us. The life time of a species on earth is somewhere between 2 to 10 million yrs; so the chances of a number intelligent life forms happening at the same time >1 is remote. With enormous distances between stars it is unlikely and we will never know that there are just or more intelligent beings like us. So far to us the tyranny of distance has no practical solution. The only way we may find out another intelligence if they have mastered wireless communication and they are within 100 light yrs of us. Therefore with too few stars within this range for there to be any sort of luck to struck pay dirt. Seti might find locally generated signals further a field but would require power of transmitters beyond what ever we have built to date. To overcome galactic radio noise one would require powerful transmitters approaching the power of our sun.

It's only because we have intelligence that we think that we know this.
However, we may measure intelligence differently to the other animals on the planet - and they may think differently !
