I recently bought a new computer with windows vista on it and have started learning how to network my computers. My desktop with vista on it is networked to the other desktop here (with xp on it) and my laptop with xp on it. I have them all in the same workgroup already and when they are all turned on my computer see both the laptop and the other desktop. I am able to print and everything and view files on the desktop with xp on it. However when I try to acess my laptop a message pops up that says "Cannot logon to this computer because I dont have permission". I went onto my laptop and made sure that I had file and printer sharing on. I am new at this and could use any advice that can be given.

What do I do to my laptop to be able to view the files on it?
Where is it on my laptop that I change settings to allow people to view stuff on it?

Anything anybody can tell me would be helpful, even advice on how to network.

Thanks.

check the fire wall settings on the laptop by right clicking on the network icon and going to properties then double click on the adapter your using to connect to the network..
Select the advanced tab and inside there select turn off firewall and hit ok. Now try connecting to it from the other system and if your still not able to connect then check your file and print sharing settings to make sure you have it set to allow others to browse your files. once you get connectivity
renable the firewall but make sure the no exceptions box isnt
checked but still keep the firewall enabled for security especially if its a wireless connection.

GOOD LUCK!!

Its sound like you have a firewall blocking network traffic on the laptop.

Either turn off the firewall on the laptop or set it up to allow networking. You do this usually in the exclusion area of the firewall software.

I think the firewall is the software who blocks the incoming traffic in your laptop, so you can see the other computer files on your laptop but not the laptops files.
Good luck

double check that the user account you are using on the client computer (the one you want to connect from) exists, with the same password, on the host computer (the one that has the files you need and you want to connect to)
