when i press the wi-fi button on my laptop, nothing happens. what does this mean? does it mean that drivers needed aren't installed? what drivers do i need to make it work? please cite useful websites thanks

It could be that you dont have the wireless radio installed in your system also. Some manufacturers have a standard chasis for there laptops but dont always use all the features for a particular model.

I would like to help you with possible drivers, but I have no idea make or model of your laptop....

The wifi button? What brand of laptop are you using? There may be a switch to enable / disable wifi, but you still need to configure the wireless network and start your browser for anything to "happen".
