Actually, the statues they give out at the Academy Awards are called Oscars. There's a story about how they were named, but I forget it at the moment. The Academy Awards are given out by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Golden Globes on the other hand are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Also, the Academy Awards are only given out for films and their many aspects, but the Golden Globes give out award for television shows as well as films.

Well they are actually called the Academy Awards but the name of the statue is Oscar, so people started calling them the Oscars. I'm not sure how they differ from the Golden Globes.

The Academy Awards are given by the Academy of Motion Pictures, so, it's a big deal.. (the academy is made up of their peers.. actors, directors etc.)

Golden Globes are more about ratings.. I believe they are given out by a media group.. This is dictated more by what people are watching and when.. which is in turn dictated by how easy it is for them to watch.. (i.e.: a film that was only played in select cities is never going to have the numbers that one that was played in every theater will..)
