It's understandable to be afraid of having the pelvic exam done if one is facing it for the first time. The reason is because up until that time no one has had to go in there because they have no problems.

For first timers to a pelvic exam and pap smear I would recommend they see a female physician. And even before that part is done you can ask to talk to the doctor while still in plainclothes. Let them know how this makes you feel.

The doctors are used to this coming up time and time again and if the doctor is really good they will answer your questions til you are satisfied (which is also how you start to gain trust in the doctor). When it comes to the exam itself a really good doctor will explain what they are doing as they do it so that it won't be as intimidating to the woman.

If you have other questions for me please feel free to e-mail or IM me off site any time.

He has done so many and you shouldn't be scared, there should be a nurse in the room with you and this will make you more at ease. Women don't like the invasion of privacy as the doctor probes. I would imagine that 50% or more, Hate to visit the doctor on these occassions. The doctor will talk to you to get your mind off of it.. Relax, it doesn't take about a minute or two, and it's over.
Be strong and good luck.

I used to feel that way at first, but I think that was mostly the anxiety of finding out bad news. You should never go to a male doctor for "down there" inspections, it will never feel OK, and personally I don't think it ever is. It helps if you just think that you have to do it, and it's not a big deal. Freak out afterwards if you want, but when you go in there, go in with the attitude that it will be over before you know it, and she looks at them all day, to her it's like looking at a text book. She's not staring, she's doing a job down there, lol.

It is scary - totally normal. Lots of people experience anxiety when visiting a gynecologist. If it is a male gynecologist, make sure he has a female nurse present when he is examining you.
