If only I knew that the heatsink when removed would fry my processor due to excessive heat this won't happen but I didn't. How much will I pay for a replacement?

There's a reason they call it a "heatsink."

You can shop around for a new processor. Make sure it fits your socket. The prices will vary--you might be able to get a good deal on a new one. You may want to consider replacing the entire motherboard if that is more feasible economically.

Since Windows lives in the hard drive you shouldn't have to reinstall it, but if your new processor is significantly different from your old one you might have to do some reconfiguring as you resurrect your computer.

I have replaced hard drives and generally found the simplest solution was to reinstall my OS.

No, you won't have to reinstall Windows, unless you're one of the poor souls who owns Windows Vista. And here is the best place to buy a replacement: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010340343+50001157+1389627502+1050716915&name=Pentium+D

after replacing it you don't need to reinstall because your OS is found in the hard disk not in the processor
