When someone is very pompous, sure of themselves, or has a very high opinion of themselves, you could say or do something to bring them back to reality, or make them feel not-so-good about themselves, thereby "bringing them down a few notches".

If someone thinks too highly of themselves, you "bring them down a few notches" by pointing out flaws or otherwise showing them they're not as great as they think they are.

someone who thinks they are gods gift or think they are wonderful. and you don't think they are so you bring them down a notch eg telling them they are not gods gift!
