The working clothes worn by men changed in appearance between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Stockings, breeches, wide-cut shirt, waistcoat, jacket and hat were the common attire at the turn of the 19th century. By about 1840, working men were wearing full length trousers. Collarless shirts and waistcoats remained, though the wearing of coloured handkerchiefs tied round the neck became more common. Nearly all men wore hats, the designs of which altered frequently.

The costume style associated in early 19th-century, was an attempt to recapture classic simplicity. Women wore a thin muslin dresses with a high waist, a low round neck, and puffed short sleeves. Men wore a short-waisted cutaway coat with tails, a high collar, and large lapels and military boots; plain-coloured wools became predominant. The whole male appearance was strikingly military.

Modern scholars believe that clothing provides a mark of identity and a means of nonverbal communication. In traditional societies, clothing functions almost as a language that can indicate a person's age, gender, marital status, place of origin, religion, social status, or occupation. In modern industrialised societies, clothing is not so rigidly regulated and people have more freedom to choose which messages they wish to convey. Nevertheless, clothing can still provide considerable information about the wearer, including individual personality, economic standing, even the nature of events attended by the wearer. When a woman who usually wears blue jeans puts on a frilly, flowered dress, she may be stating that she wants to look more traditionally feminine. A person wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the name of a rock band is probably a fan of that music group and may have attended one of the group's concert.

An essay on clothing will be incomplete if it does not talk about the fabric. The development of Textile Industry is based on the combination of different fabric materials. The wool, terry wool suits were worn by the aristocrats in winter. The cotton fabric looks always elegant and Egyptian cotton
is dearer. Cotton cloths are common in tropical countries.
Poly Cotton , Terry cotton which are mix of terry line & cotton made notable changes in fashion. They don't need iron and dry almost immediately. Use of synthetic material in clothing
was a turning point in fashion garments.
