I've absolutely no idea if this works, but the theory sounds good...
If the person who's nicked it doesn't know what they're doing with it, and you've got POP3 e-mail set up through Outlook, there's a chance that they've logged onto your e-mail account. If this is the case, your e-mail provider might have a record of the IP address of the connection, giving an idea of where any connection was made (e.g. after the date your computer was stolen).
As I understand it, they do keep these records. Whether they'll provide them to you, or to the police, I don't know.
Apart from that, I've no idea how you'd go about tracing it.

I say it gone forever. Unless they can trace your product code for the O/s assuming your using windows. They would have to be pretty dumb connecting to the internet with your product key. But chances are they won't bother with it.
YOu can always build a better one anyways. And I would bolt the chassis to a table or get the case with a lock on it. And tether it with a heavy gauge cable to the Table to the pc. Make sure you use like a Torx bit would help.

The best thing to do is call around to local pawn shops, as well as notifying the police department (non-emergency number, can be found in your local phone book) so they can take a report. Gather the information and a picture(s) of it if you have one so you can confirm it is/was yours.
You could only track the IP of the computer if it is online.
And IP's look more like 68.220.... or 22.346.....
192.168.2.1 is your routers/internet providers IP

If the thief is stupid enough to send an email to one of your contacts, there may be enough information in the email header for the police and ISP to identify the location of the computer. Tell all your contacts as soon as you can what has happened and make sure they do not delete any other emails apparently from you.

Hmm. Possibly. It would help if you knew it's IP adress (internet protocol adress i think it stands for). If you know it's IP (IPs look like this: 192.168.0.21, or suimthing like that). Then you could go on a site which you can enter an IP adress into, and then it can track it within a couple kilometres depending on the service the site offers.
