Isn't that why they have offered that option in the new reporting system.

That is what I will be doing from now on and I encourage other pro McCanns to do the same.

What you are saying is
"I want a new law where if someone says something untrue about someone (in my eyes) then it should be an offence."

We live in a democratic society. What you are suggesting is an end to free speech. First you will need to charge all members of parliment with your so called libel because pretty much everything they tell us are lies.
If you even report someone in such a way how do you propose to prove it as libel seeing as neither you nor I know what happened to Madeleine McCann, whether her parents are guilty or innocent. But what you must not forget they are suspects, albeit in another country. They act like people on the run and take all possibl action to defend themselves against being charged. Now this is good sense, I agree but that would be enough. Why need to get the public on your side? Why care? When your daughter is missing, possibly in the hands of some sicko, would you really have time to worry about the likes of us and what we thought. I doubt it.
Why don't you stop worrying about people you don't know, wait for the facts to emerge and remember you live in a democracy, that means free speech and sadly free speech hurts sometimes. The internet is uncontrolled if you don't like that also don't come on here. If you dislike the press reports don't read the papers.
I think this new petition by Phil McCann is stupid and have not looked at it.
I have a right to my view and how dare you insinuate anyone take that away from me.

Ok you want honesty from me so you will get it. Let's start with something first. I am Anti Gerry and Anti Kate NOT Anti Madeleine. Remember Madeleine was the victim in all this. The mystery has not being solved yet. So I do not know what happened to Madeleine so I am not going to jump the gun and say this happened or that happened. The only part of this whole saga I know is what you have already said about them neglecting their children. OK I agree with that. But what some Anti's or others seem to forget is that they still have two other children. I think they should be punished or charged in some way that does not effect the twins. After all I am sure we do not want them to suffer.

No, somebodies opinion is not slander nor libel.

In most courts of law the prosecution of a defendant usually starts along the lines of "I suggest, that is not what happened, and you are lying". All sides have to be discussed, scrutinized and suggested to hopefully come up with the truth.

People should be able to discuss topics freely, unfortunately, often we might not agree, so we should answer and debate like adults to get our point across. The minute we start reporting, suing etc etc because we do not like someones opinion, the minute freedom of speech will end, and it shouldn't, it should be cherished.

I am classed as 'pro' McCann, if I loose an argument, and I realize when I have, I just find a new point or angle to my argument.

I believe that the McCanns have not harmed their child.
If you get so angry with other opinions, perhaps Q&A is not for you.

Libel or slander is not a criminal offence but a civil matter. You can sue someone for libel or slander through the civil courts. What people on here are doing is not illegal but if a person took offence what was being said about them, they could sue that individual.
I´m not supporting anyone regarding the McCann´s though I do believe people have got too obsessed with this issue. Their own lives revolve around it. It is like a drug to them. They are making wild accusations about things they know nothing about.

I think you will find that debating a topic is not libel!

Anything that has been reported is in the public domain and as such people are allowed to communicate it further and talk about it and form opinions without that being libel. The libel comes say if a paper or someone says something that is new, not provided by some other source. Once its in the papers its in the papers and is in the public domain so no longer libel.

Something that could be prosecuted though are the number of personal and threatening/abusive messages members are sending between each other - its called harrasment. Its much much easier to prosecute so if you have been hassled in a personal way by these 'hardcore' abusing or threatening or bullying you you can do something about that.

I would point out I am sure I am perceived as an anti-McCann, but I don't think its ok to send abusive messages to one another over this forum or on personal mail. But both pros and antis have done so. I have seen a number of personal remarks being made and it makes me very sad to think we cannot debate a subject without threatening and harrassing one another. And before you say 'what about the poor McCanns seeing this debate' - I think you will find they don't give a monkey's toss - they are too busy trying to sort out the current situation and quite rightly so.

I don't think having views on how to care for your children when eating out should be an offence. I do not know the McCanns. I do know that they ate out leaving under age children out of sight and probably out of mind. They are well off parents, why did they do this?

Depends if they are actually libellous.

Anyone is allowed to have an opinion - ie "I think Kate and Gerry did it". Thats not libel thats free speech.

Saying "Kate and Gerry are murderers" is libel.

Well obviously that would depend on a court of law. Not for people on a site like Yahoo questions and answers. If you think that threatening anybody with libel on a site like this will keep anybody quiet then think again! Free speech is key to all sites like this. Gerry I am surprised at you. Tut Tut Tut! Hark, I think Kate is calling!

The internet used to one of he last bastions of free speech.

Unfortunately our hosts YAhoo put pay to thst by disclosing the contents of private mails to the Chinese Authorities. Those concerned are now in prison for up to 10yrs.

Why?

Because they had an opinion that did not tow the party line.

If you feel that you wolud like to bring this sort of cencorship and punishment to the world in general best of luck.

In the meantime just keep praying Yahoo dont disclose the contents of your emails....
