From a PR point of view this would be a disatster.

Why has he made such a brave move?

He took a gamble that they are innocent, and even if not, they would find it diffiuclt to prove guilt

If the tide turns, he will just distance himself from it and play the line "They fooled everyone, the public, their family and me, I was only trying to do the right thing"

It will have no adverse outcomes for Richard Branson. He is doing what he considers to be the right thing. He believes like I do that they are entitled to the best legal representation available to them. To all you cynics who seemingly profess to know all the answers to all of the questions raised by this sad case let me say this. The McCanns have not been charged with any crime by anyone other than you and others of your ilk. You have no evidence for any of the outrageous accusations that you make. You set yourselves up as prosecutor, judge and jury and you arrive at your conclusions without seeing the accused, hearing or seeing any evidence and then making statements which are very close to being libellous. It is the secrecy of the Portuguese investigations, and the uncorroborated leaks from so called official sources that has fuelled the outpouring of bile against the McCanns. All of this speculation diverts resources from where it should be devoted. namely finding Madeleine. If the police were to direct their efforts to that end rather than investigating a murder that they can't be certain was committed and linking that to two people against whom they apparently have no hard incriminating evidence, then Richard Branson would not feel it necessary to offer financial support.

He's spoken to them, unlike a vast amount of people who feel qualified to comment on the case by purely having read the Sun or Mirror.

As an Entrepreneur, Im sure he's fully aware of the implications if he is wrong, but what would he be guilty of? At the most being massively generous and philanthropic... I dont think it'd affect his business status overtly...

All he's doing is contributing funds to raise a fair trial, which seems impossible anyway as its been so thrased about now, I doubt they'll find any genuine inpartial party... Having heard the news this morning though, it seems as though the Judge who's hands it is in, does not feel it necessary to recall them to Portugal and they are being questioned at home...Would seem that perhaps the witch hunt may be over for now and so hopefully they wont have to utilise too much of his money anyway.

If the McCanns are found guilty then Branson will be seen as someone who was misguided but contributed for the right reasons and in good faith. If they are found to be innocent it will be great for his PR. Branson is big enough to look after himself and never needs to worry for the rest of his life

The question is hypothetical because there is not a shred of evidence showing the McCanns as being guilty of murder or accidental killing and hiding the body. Richard Branson does not have time to read the Yahoo answers smear campaign so simply looks at the facts and uses his judgement, he has good judgement you might agree

He was probably advised by an army of consultants and theyhad sifted through mounds of reasons. He has gone and done something that I think wasn't very prudent, but he for some reason thinks is a great idea.
I hope they didn't have anything to do with Maddie's disappearance, but it sure don't look good.

I dont think any. I was surprised at his input, but he is that type of man. He will try and help where he can. However, he is not always right and he may have made a mistake, time will tell. His record goes before him, although I dont agree with him I personally admire him. It would be sad if his loyalty and generous spirit was misplaced.

Obviously you've not seen the news this morning.

The Judge Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias, rejected prosecutors' request to have the McCanns return to Portugal.

It goes to show that even the judge has his doubts

They are innocent until proven guilty and it's not going to happen in a court of law.

Branson believes he is right and has taken a stand. If things go pear shaped, why should people think bad of him unless of course ......
