Take it to a jeweller. If he knows his stuff, he'll know pretty much straight away.
Give aways can include:
Weight; A genuine Rolex is quite heavy,
Sweep; should be a smooth motion, not a tick tick action.

Take it to a proper jewellers and they will tell you.
Easiest check is that a genuine Rolex costs upwards of £5,000 - is the preson that bought liekly to spend that kind of money?

Having been looking at some of the answers. Regarding the second hand action. I am wearing a '£3,750.00' Breitling watch whose action is flawless, i.e. smooth rotation around the dial. However, the watch actually cost me about £20.00!!!
Having said that, I did own a Tag Heuer replica recently whose hand 'ticked' around the dial.

If you bought it from a genuine jeweller's then there should have been a certificate stating the authenticity otherwise what you should do is take it to a jeweller's to get it appraised. No need to go to a website coz you won't know what to look for.

I think that if the 2nd hand ticks round its fake and if it glides round its real....could be wrong way round though..lol
