In the case of birth control, I believe the placebos allow you to have a period because you are not taking the hormones that prevent you from having one the rest of the month. But your body would experience the exact same effects whether you took the placebo or took nothing. The placebos are only there to help you maintain the habit of taking a pill every day.

A placebo, by definion, has no drug in it. They just give you those pills so that you can take a pill every day and be able to remember that you took it. It is a good idea, because BC pills only work when taken regularly.

What causes the period to start is not a drug, but the lack of it. When you body senses that it doesn't have those hormones from the pills, it starts the period.

If you don't take the placebos, it will be the same as if you did.

The placebo pills are just reminders to help one keep on schedule with their pack of pills. What causes the period to occur is not having hormones for that one week. Some brands of birth control pills don't have placebo pills (these are the 21 day packs) and the woman just skips that week to have her period and then starts the medication again the next week.

The placebo pills are just sugar pills. They don't do anything. If you don't take them you will still get your period. Sorry. There are basicly only there to keep you in the swing of taking your pill everyday. So you don't forget to take your next real pill the following week. That's all.

You have your period because you body is no longer getting any hormones through your birth control pills to stop you from getting it.

They are reminder pills, they do not force a period.

If you skip them and go to your next active pill, you might not get a period, but it will be heavier and worse when you finally do get it, and it could take months for your cycle to get regulated again.

If you just don't take any for that week, you are fine and will still get your period. Just remember to start your new pack the next week.
