There is no past because it's already over. There is no future becuase it's over yet. There is no present becuase it's also in the future!

I suppose some of it can, as we learn to 'let sleeping dogs lie,' which I practice by attempting to live in the moment, a form of meditation I guess that is rapidly becoming just a time of "now" relaxation for me. The present becomes full of both sensory and thoughtful experience.

Then I go on and do a thing in present time with a clear head and mind, looking more toward the future than any backward and done-deal events.
I have to admit those past events pretty much made me who I am today however, so they're not 'under the rug' by any means!

Hi. Before the past became the past, the past was the future. Therefore the past can never become the past because at some stage the past was the future.

In my experience, and perhaps this can help you too, the past cant remain in the past, and will always meet us in the present until we either-

1.Be honest with ourselves and don't try to hide our past and pretend it never happened, if we accept it, it will allow us to build our present and future on a more stable foundation, which will not need to be brought to the surface and/or

2.We face and make up for what we have done in the past, and resolve the issue so we can move on with the present.

Because for a lot of people it is a refutation of the future which is uncertain and compounds any insecurities felt by many people who are secure in their past..perhaps a sign that they really existed at all,or on the other hand you might be referring to letting sleeping dogs die and getting on with the business of the living..in the now, which I guess ,is the future and once passed, becomes the past.People have long memories, when it suits them or cannot let them go...

Too many people love to talk about their problems infact too many. It just re-hashes all the pain that went with it. How can the past be the past. People will have to look in their heart for these answers. First as long as we talk about it - it will never be far from our minds. We think about it, we talk to our friends about it. We are consumed with remembering. Bad things must be helped from dropping the thinking by change in putting their mind on other thoughts (good thoughts) and FORGET the pain of the past..

Don't talk about it .
Don't think about it.

Because it is how we got to the present. And, whenever someone is unhappy withthe present, they try to find the reason for it in the events that led up to it. Namely, in the past.
It's not really all bad. Examining the past will frequently lead to insights which, if used properly, will prevent us from making the same mistakes in the future.
