The word monsoon is used to refer to a seasonal wind which flows with consistency and regularity for one part of the year and blows from the other direction for the other part of the year. But, the rainy season associated with the monsoons is the outstanding feature of the climate of these regions.Hence the term "the monsoon' is popularly used to denote the rains, without reference to the winds.
South-west monsoon and North-east monsoon in India are the best examples of monsoon conditions.Pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorm precede the arrival of monsoons.Sometimes cloud burst occurs causing floods.Mumbai city in India experiences this almost every year.
The south-west monsoon in India originates in the southern hemisphere oceans, travel long distances over Indian ocean, cross the equator and blow over the western coast of South India bringing lot of moisture to India thereby bringing the expected rains after the hot summer to enable agricultural operations. This continues for four months. After this ,North-east monsoon starts and brings lot of rains to South India particularly Tamil nadu state.Cyclones form only during North-east monsoon season and bring heavy rain to the east coast of penisular India. As far as India is concerned, peninsular India would have become a desert without monsoon winds as there are no perennial rivers in South India.
