Great point. It kinda reminds me of the book 1984. If everyone believes it, it is considered true. For example, a strange example, but it applies: I discover there is indeed a lifeform on Venus but it is a being which no one else believes is real. Does this make me wrong because I'm the only one who realizes it?

The truth is just that--truth. For instance, pain is truth. If I punch you in the face as hard as I can, you will feel pain. Now, someone could come and tell you that you aren't feeling pain, but that you are feeling pleasure. What we have then is a lie (which is un-truth), not a difference of opinion.
Using your example, that man who was executed for realizing the world was round died because he knew the truth about our planet. But the people who executed him believed in a lie. They may have been mistaken, but that changes nothing--they believed in a lie.
How do you know that the truth is actually a truth? All truths are things that (disputed or not) cannot be changed because they just are. Example: If you are born as a man, that's what you are. You may feel like a woman on the inside, but while you are physically male, you are a man. Everyone who sees your naked body will say "that is a man."
See? The matter of truth is actually less complicated than it seems. Only when people come in and begin debating and offering opinions on what is already obvious does truth seem to become "blurry."

This is a usual question here. Here is my usual answer:
=============================================
You will detect truth instantly because it is stubborn as can be. It will not leave you alone. It creeps up and spills in all directions. It will not go away. It is bellowed in all corners of the universe, over billions of years.
Truth is redundant, until you get the point.
=============================================
Truth is obvious because of its repeatability. Actually, truth is all around us and engulfing us. But because most of us would rather live within the confines of our self-made realities, we ignore the truth. Then when we trip our foot over on the truth that is just lying on the floor and we had to knock our head on to something, the truth seems to be suddenly "just there". Thus, the saying "I stumbled upon the truth."
Also, truth has the quality of clarity. You will know that it is already speaking to you because you of your own accord had not spoken so clearly. Truth speaks at the depths of your heart, of your being that however others disprove it or take it away from you, it's just there with you. It's as if it's molded upon you that not even death could erase it away. Witness to this were those who'd rather die for it.

The truth does not change. Most people aren't honest with themselves, getting lost in their own perception of the truth. Do intentions have any change on the truth? I believe so! We hear what we want to hear. Did you ever hear that if you hear something twice , it's probably the truth... So great minds really think alike? subliminal thoughts What if a T.V. program on 09/09 reminded you of 09/11, every night till 09/11 you, " by chance " look @ the clock @ 9:11.The subconscious mind is amazing. The things we pick up, when we aren't even focusing...The truth depends on whom you ask.??Comp

Unknown truth. You believe in what you believe is what we called truth. That actually, it is just merely a believe that could be truth and not. And therefore, if the case of believe is a truth, it is still suspiscious, and due to that, if one can prove the world is not round, and it appears to be like that, the believe of one can be the truth. We wont know for sure, but we can keep believing till the truth emerges.

the example that u've given is about the truth in belief of science. there is nothing that can be a great truth. the truth can only be seen through falsification of science.. just like the incident of falsifying that pluto is a planet. everyone belived that pluto IS a planet, until the day where someone falsify the theory based on evidence. so, all that we can say is taht, truth must come with evidence if the truth really is the truth

I consider myself eccentric, as I consider most of my friends to be eccentric. Some people don't understand us, but most do in some form. I am an independent film maker, a good friend is a writer, and her niece took up film writing in college. Some people don't get it, just like some people don't get my friends in their 40s and 50s who still ride bikes and play in rock bands.
The thing for you to do is to learn a lot about the subjects you want to know about, so that you will be free of erroneous facts and in tune with facts period.

Truth is a pathless land.
Everyone sees the world different, so everyone will have different versions of the truth been true to them.
One needs a certain amount of faith to believe that he has found the truth in a religion/book/philosophy.

The truth is you can't!
The only thing that you can do is collect the fact as many as you can --> so you can decide to believe that truth or not..
The problem is, how far you can believe "that truth" ?
When you believe "that truth" 100 % that's become a TRUTH.

Whose truth are you talking about?
There are a great many "truths" that are only true for the one who believes them.
There may be many presumptions of truth today that will fall out of favor in the future.
