Forgive my bluntness, but I recall from an old medical textbook that 'aggressive cunnilingus' might actually force air into the strained vessels on the inside of a woman's vaginal canal, which in turn could cause an embolism. Is this actually a credible risk, or is it just alarmism that has been abandoned over the years?

I think my midwife actually shortened it to "don't let him blow in your vagina"... I am pretty sure that cunnilingus is safe, I don't think "aggressive" action could force air in there, maybe but it depends on how aggressive we're talking here!! Also I know this sounds VERY blunt, but occasionally while pregnant last time I do recall air getting in my vagina during certain positions, due to my awkward new body... It never caused a problem, it would make noise though

ok

*dies of embarassment*

Moral of story: just be careful, I don't think it's dangerous to recieve "average" cunnilingus but i guess stay away from anything too rough or incredibly crazy, pregnant or not.

If there is any uncertainty about your or her STDs, a barrier prophylaxis is a must. This should apply for any new partner as well. The most frequently used barrier method is the usage of dental dam. If you are not able to buy it, you can easily make one by cutting up a condom. Always check the expiration date of the condom, to make sure it’s good to be used. Unroll the condom and use a pair of sharp scissors to cut it’s tip off, and then cut down one side of it lengthwise, so that you get a long latex rectangle.
Plastic wrap can also be used instead of dental dam. To make cunnilingus more pleasurable and exciting, put a drop or two of lubricant to the side of the barrier you are using that will be touching your girlfriend’s vulva. This will help in giving her the feeling of receiving unprotected oral sex.

I haven't heard of this so I am thinking we are more educated about pregnancy and sexuality. I have had several sexuality classes while working on my BA in psychology and never heard of this. The cervix is closed so I just don't see aggressive cunnilingus doing harm.

"Several maternal deaths from air embolism (air bubbles in the venous
circulation, including the lungs, brain, and heart) have been reported during
the middle and last trimesters of pregnancy following the forceful blowing
of air into the vagina during cunnilingus (Aronson and Nelson, 1967)."

I have never heard this. This is probably something that was said many years ago, and has still lingered around. I have never heard it.

And to be honest.....my husband and I *ahem* engage in this every single time.....and I never had any problems. And was never warned against it.

So now that I have revealed that about my sex life, I would just say to ask a doctor.

When I was pregnant I took a class where I learned all about different activities and such that could endanger the fetus and this was never mentioned. Hope this helps!
