i live in napa and my preferred airports in order are Oakland, San Francisco, Sacramento.
Oakland & SF are both served by the local airport shuttle called Evans. They pick you up at the airport and drive you to Napa...so no car needed at all! It is usually $30 or 40 round trip. If you plan to drive, it is approximately an hour to either airport, in non commute time or the weekends.
I do on occasion fly out of Sacramento. It often times has cheaper flights, but is about an hour and 15 minute drive. and there is not public transportation there.
Napa has an airport, but it only serves private jets/planes. There are no commerical flights out of Napa.

You're in San Francisco and you want to take a plane to Napa? An ultralight?
Well, let's pretend you're asking the question from New York. The best airport to use to get to the San Francisco Bay Area is Oakland, not SFO. Much less hassle, especially if you're going to Napa from the airport. Drive time from Oakland to Napa is 45 minutes, tops. More like 30 minutes. From SFO it would be an hour if you were lucky.

Oakland, you can rent a car and be there in an hour or take a bus, why would anyone want the hassle of crossing the bay bridge to get to Napa, geez. For heavens sake Not SACRAMENTO airport that would be 120 miles out of the way with the worst commute on planet earth.

I lived in Sonoma for a few years.. if your going to Napa, probably the best airport will be San Fransciso.. from there it's about an hour and a half to 2 hours (depending on traffic) to reach napa..
Once you enjoy Napa.. shoot up 101 and go a little north of Santa Rosa, and exit off on River Road.. take that road West.. all the way to the sea and you'll see the most beautiful beaches..
Remember that movie Goonies from the 80's.. the scene where that ship at the end goes out into the sea.. that was filmed out there.. it's very beautiful and probably about 2 hour drive from Napa.. but well worth it..
Once you get on River Road.. you get a really 26 mile drive of beautiful winerys.. Martinelli and Korbel, as well as beautiful Redwood Trees as you start getting closer to the Russian River which goes out to the sea. I promise you.. if your taking the time to go to Napa.. take the time to take that drive... I promise you, you won't regret it.

Oakland is closest airport, and following are Sacramento and San Francisco, If you drive from OAK to napa valley, it takes 1 hr. check www.bayareavisit.com for other information
Napa hotels are pretty expensive, if you stay in Vellejo, it is much cheaper( around $50 per night).

I flew into Oakland once, not again. So I've always used SFO and then caught the Evans bus to Napa. It takes about an hour and a half. If you want to rent a car, fly into Sacramento. Much easier drive.
