You just bring up another subject or say somthing that is totaly irelevant to the conversation.
i usaly say somthing like bongo congo to make the person say what the
or if you know somthing that some one is looking foward to or if some one is zoned out you can say somthing that will make them snap back into chating.

i've learned to say something completely ridiculous to break up the silence with a good laugh. for example "and then i found $50!" or "and then i wrestled the bear to the ground with my bare hands." that usually works with me!
