First of all, I have been married to my spouse for 19 years and have found through the years, that his position has often put me into situations where I could not hang around him at social functions. You learn very quickly that finding someone interesting to talk with or being able to mingle is an unrated talent that not many people are really good at. The internet makes it much easier to keep up on a variety of interests and things that are happening around the world, so I would advise you to keep a running list of things that you are interested in as well as whomever you would have to possibly be talking with(their interests, hobbies, whatever), by keeping some email alerts updated on these subjects. Many functions are thrown at you without much time to prepare, so knowing a little about the type of people you'd be meeting would be helpful...but even if you went somewhere cold turkey, I find that breaking the ice is the hardest step. Saying something like "Hi, I'm ---- and isn't this a fantastic----(room,party,great dessert, whatever)" usually can get the ball rolling. Sometimes commenting on a piece of jewelry, clothing piece, hairstyle, car...can get you going. I would still stay away from the typical hotheads of trouble(religion, politics) as these are subjects from where there are usually no winners, no end in sight once the arguments start to fly. If you are a stay-at-home mom/dad...my advice would be to talk about something other than kids. Everyone will assume that you do nothing more than sit around the house and watch soap operas or go to kid sports/dance classes. It is up to YOU to make YOU the interesting person that everyone wants to talk with. Find yourself a little shy, just do what the Europeans are famous for...stand back, relax, grab a drink and listen in to the conversations. There is a reason for all those parks in Europe...these people know how to mix in with a variety of people without stressing about every little thing. Hope it helped. Guard Dog

i can't say that i am a jack of all trades because that would mean extensive knowledge on everything.

i can particularly can hold great conversations in music, entertainment, career, makeup, fashion, computer stuff, family issues, friends, school, technology, etiquette. i can discuss these topics with a great fiery passion because it can be based from experience or knowledge or both.

i can relate to some discussions about real estate, insurance, law

i can't really understand politics and the stock market. i can make some side comments like "oh really, that's terrible" because when it comes to these things i like to stay as clueless as possible. it is very complicated.

i avoid discussing sex, religion and politics because people can get really sensitive about this. I have my own beliefs and sometimes people think that if you go against their beliefs that you are against them too.

basically if i don't know much about the topic i inject "really?" in the conversation or just smile. after i say "really" the other person will elaborate more on the topic and it will give me more details so i can further understand the situation. thats when i can come up with my opinion and start discussing and contributing more to the conversation.

I could probably talk to anyone pretty much. Maybe not for long, maybe forever. It too depends on who I'm talking to and what it's about. I don't know everything or even a little about everything...........geez I'd be a genious even if I knew a little about it all...........Sometime I could have something too add to a conversation but won't for whatever reason, either I'm moody or don't much care for the people, or who knows. So normally I stay quiet and listen.

I think I am, I know little bits about many things and people even strangers seem to open up to me, I seem to be able to keep a conversation going quite well.
