funny you should ask this, just been away and stayed in a hotel, very good hotel, but we could hear this noise, quite loud but couldn't figure out what it was, we asked the manager, she didn't know, we thought it was the lift or something to do with the water system. All went quiet, had a very good first night sleep until 5.30am when it began all over again, lasted for an hour, it was the water pump.
We changed rooms, went to the other side of the hotel.

This is the first time we had that sort of problem, but for me it is normally noise, people who have drunk too much during the evening and making a nuisance of them selves going to bed.

Never stayed in a dirty hotel, but that would be terrible and I would have to change hotels.

Not knowing who used the bed before me. One time I found a hair on the comfortor. Oh and it wasn't the kind the that comes from the top of your head either. The pillows are usually too flat or hard. So for me it's the beds.
