A midwife is just a nurse who has had more training. You can still deliver in a hospital and have a pregnancy just like you would if you saw a doctor. Many women choose a midwife because midwives often are more personal and spend more time with you. Doctors are more clinical.

To have a home delivery, you don't need a midwife. If you want a home birth, you should find a doula who can help you plan the birth and help you get what you need set up. Keep in mind that mere minutes can make the difference between life and death for mom and baby, and delivering at home ups your risks. Even if you choose to go this route, you should still have normal check-ups in an office with medical equiptment to make sure everything is okay with you and baby. Good luck.

My mother had me a home under water. It helped he relax. She even slept through contractions. She had 2 midwives. They are techinally your doctors, but they aren't so darn chaotic like doctors at the hospital. They should be there by your side at all times, mainly because you are the only person they need to pay attention to. I don't know about the check ups with them though. Herbs I doubt are used. Just because the baby will be born at home doesn't mean they will herbal theorpies...

Sorry. I didn't have a midwife with my last pregnancy and don't plan on having one now. I have a fabulous OB/GYN who I trust 100% and I would never have a child at home.
