Women are certainly under an exceeding amount of pressure to maintain a certain body image; however, I would add that increasingly men are too. If you look at both male and female adolescents, you'll see increasing rates of eating disorders. I mean, just think about the amount of money Americans spend on cosmetic surgery to alter their bodies in hopes of achieving the "right" body. Some people (both men and women) take out mortgages on their homes to pay for these (unnecessary) surgeries.
I think it's a media inspired and enhanced phenomena that economically and psychologically hurts average and working people.

Every women is happy until she sees another girl with a better body image than her. This turns her world upside down...
If only she could understand that it is not the body image that matters. It is what you are from the heart and not what you look like from the outside.
Women want to look a certain way, sometimes to impress their man and sometimes to be in the public eye but the point which they forget in that only because today's women are being pressured does not mean that they change themselves for others.
If only the world could understand that women are special in their own ways. Some have the brains and some have the body and some have both. But not having an ideal body image is not what the issue is, the issue is that today's women feel insecure and just make a mess of themselves. If you feel good then you definitely look good. Today, every lady wants to look like a leading actress on T.V. But some great women of India like Indra Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu and other women are respected because of the good work they have done not because of their body image. I agree that image certainly leaves an impact on womens' lives but they dont need to care if they look big. They need to think big...

That ideal body image is one that virtually no woman can conform to unless she's lucky enough to be born with those looks or has undergone plastic surgery.

People should be fit for health reasons, not to please people.
But yes, I do agree that women are placed under pressure to look like Barbie dolls. And men are pressured to be like romantic Ken dolls. But just because they give in to the pressure doesn't mean they are a bad person.

Someone else shares my opinion...I would just like to support the concept.
Women place themselves under too much pressure. Most men worth being with don't get caught up in the super-trivial matters, anyway...

The pressure only come from themselves. Majority of men love a curvy body and some meat. I think some women on earth should grow up and just accept themselves for themselves.

Yes.
But mostly by the society. not men in particular (or woman for that matter) but the "thing" is pushing them (us .. lol) to be something we cant (because of different body constructur). But I think the trend is turning and the health is starting to be the issue. Turn in the right direction if you ask me.

Too much pressure to keep their optimal weight and not get obese ? I dont think so. Way I see it our ideal image is the only thing keeping obesity in check, not that it is working really well in America.

This is good that women are trying to exercise, dieting and taking care of themselves so they can look as close to the ideal body image as possible. Do anybody really want to live in a world where people don't care how they look, let themslves go, just let it be. No, I don't because that mean that I have to look at ugliness everywhere I go...
