In very extreme cases, yes. But jaundice is also easily treatable immediately after birth.

Jaundice is usually harmless: this condition is often seen in infants around the second day after birth, lasting until day 8 in normal births, or to around day 14 in premature births. Serum bilirubin normally drops to a low level without any intervention required: the jaundice is presumably a consequence of metabolic and physiological adjustments after birth. In extreme cases, a brain-damaging condition known as kernicterus can occur; there are concerns that this condition has been rising in recent years due to inadequate detection and treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.

Both my sons had level 25 jaundice and were put in the NICU! They survived but it was frightening.

No my 8 month old son had jaundice when he was first born. They just wrapped him up real tight and kept him in the nursery durign the day and his skin came back to color. google jaundice and ask that question. It's just basically skin discoloration. Most babies get it, especially preemies so your little one is just fine. Congratulations! How old is it?
