When people try to encompass all of 'today's music' as a specific tempo or genre or emotion, I can't help but laugh. You are definitely referring to popular music. If you had an unquenchable thirst for lovely music, you would find a song or artist or genre even in today that was tailor-suited for your wishes. While I enjoy a wide selection of genres and decades in music, I looked through some of the artists of today that I enjoy that are also downbeat. I'd list them, but then I realized that the term 'too upbeat' is totally subjective.
Thanks to the internet, you have an entire world of music being made right now for you. To bah humbug the art form made by this generation is a very close-minded approach to solving your problem.

I stick (mostly) to the older stuff, and I am ok with that. I haven't found a new band that I liked in a long time. Mostly new music is too musically simplistic for me. I don't care what the lyrics say because I only listen to the music, and if the music is boring, the song has nothing to offer me.

I feel it's too catchy and the only thing it's really meant to do it to fish for fans. All corporate rock bands want is money, so they might as well make their songs as catchy as they want.
There are still a few good bands that admittedly put out some pretty advanced works with good basslines and guitar work, along with strong vocals and powerful/unique drummig.

i agree with you in everything you said. before anyone thinks of the lyrics they go ahead trying to pick a catchy tune. these days people only like singers beacuse there either have a good voice, hott, popular or some cool. my advice if you have a good voice you should become a singer and starting singing those kind of songs.. i would be your number 1 fan =)

I know! we have all these problems in the world right now, and all the bands care about is some stupid girl who dumped them! plus in reality, they're just businessmen. you're so right about passion. the other day i was listening to Pennywise (punk band) and wondered why i like them. their guitars are simple, their singer sucks and sometimes the lyrics are weak. but then it hit me: THE PASSION, GODAMMIT!!!

ugh! its really frustrating to me. I try to get into it and listen, but most of it just gags me. There are just a small handful of tunes from the 90's to now that I really like. Most of it is annoying to where I just can't find the words to tell ya. I keep trying tho, hopin it will get better, you know?

todays popular music doesnt apply to me because i dont want to kill myself, im not a "thug", and i dont do drugs. thats all pop music is now
more underground stuff about eliminating the christians and how people who want to kill themselves should be killed so they will shut the hell up (even though we all know the whiny cry baby pop music "i want to die because no1 loves me" music is all about wanting attention or crying because your spoiled *** doesnt feel like its getting the attention it needs and life is hard because your making a ton of money but the cops say you cant do cocain when some people dont have rich parents or even parents or food to begin with)
**** i hate pop music

I feel the same way, but, honestly, I'm starting to think it's a generation gap.
