"RIT" is one brand name, found in various outlets, but answer number 3 has a valid clue. The BLACK might look more like Charcoal or even a DEEP Purple.

You buy black dye at the grocery store and follow the directions. The best deal is to boil it on the stove, with the understanding that the pan will be interesting to clean out afterwards.

You can theoretically dye stuff in the washing machine (at least you could at one time) but it's probably not a great deal if you want to wash whites in the machine afterwards without having to run many, many loads of dark clothes to clean it out.

I used to buy white socks, which were cheap, and dye them black. It worked okay, though the black wasn't incredibly deep. Dyeing stuff so that it's truly convincing is something of an art.

There are several products out there that can be used. Here is a site that will give you more info on how much dye to use depending on the type of fabric. You can buy their products at most stores.
