Early in his career Lorenzo de’ Medici of Florence (Lorenzo the Magnificent) was a patron. Then Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan, became his patron. In the early 1500s he worked for the infamous Cesare Borgia making maps and working on military designs. Francis I, king of France, was his admirer, patron, and benefactor at the time of Leonardo's death in 1519.
An interesting tidbit is that he carried the Mona Lisa around with him for several years, constantly touching it up, never quite satisfied with it. Leonardo tended to procrastinate. A number of projects he started were never finished. The most famous of these was the Sforza horse which was supposed to be made out of 70 tons of expensive bronze which the Duke of Milan acquired for Leonardo. DaVinci made a full size statue of the horse out of clay, but he never got around to doing the bronze version. In 1495 the French under Charles VIII invaded Milan territory, and Ludovico Sforza melted down the bronze to make cannons. After the French took Milan, French soldiers used Leonardo's huge clay horse statue for archery practice. This upset Leonardo who packed up and moved elsewhere.

all Patrons are listed, but we have to add the Republic of Florence, who engaged him for painting a Victory of the Republic (the Battle of Cascina) It was a sort of competition with young Michelagnolo, who, in front of it, was painting the "Battle of Anghiari". This in This work is not survivied, Infact he sperimented a different technique, faster then "Fresco". Unfortunatly the painting was ruined by this technique, that revealed to be uncessfull. Actually they are looking for it, probably hidden behind a wall in Pitti palace.
