These amazing star making nebulae seem intent on creating new stars. We find that many stars in our local galactic neighborhood have planets (over 200 discovered so far). If the point is to create a genesis for life, isn't it astounding that our galaxy, with its 100 billion or so stars, is only one galaxy in hundreds of billions? So my question is, do you think the whole point of all this is life and if so, wouldn't the odds dictate that we are highly insignificant in the larger scheme of things?

Milky Way is a galaxy with about half a trillion stars. One of billions of gallaxies discovered so far. The farther we reach with telescopes available to us, the more galaxies we discover. Given life emerges from basic elements, which most M-class (earth-like) planets have, time, earth is young in an universe which is 18 billion years old, and a common cause, which we may safely assume is everywhere, the universe is either teeming with life or we are absolutely unique. I think we should (and don't) behave as we were something unique on a cosmic scale. But, alas, we choose not to. We have no respect for each other, yet we all came from the same mother, which makes us all brothers and sisters. We ALL share the same mitochondrial DNA which is a proof we all came from one woman, our mother.
I guess I would have to say we are both insignificant and immensely unique. Our DNA contains only 4 words (four amino acids), two would have been sufficient to make *sentences* which convey genetic information needed for species to survive. The redundancy is amazing, and thought provoking, perhaps our survival was somehow important to warrant two extra words as an insurance policy.Sorry for the long winded answer. As Uncle Albert Einstein once said "the universe is not more weird than we imagine, it is more weird than we can imagine"

universe is hell bent on creating life, or at least attempting to ...

No we are not insignificant, in a few thousand years of sentience we have been able to practically adjust our surroundings to how we like them. Now in another couple of thousand years, following the grand scheme of things, we should have the ability to make an impact on a galactic scale.

And furthermore, we are the only sentient species that we know of in the entire Universe (of course there could be more) but still that counts for a big amount.

No, we are not insignificant, and it is against our nature to think so.

Peace!

insignificant, indeed.....if all life on this planet was suddenly extinguished, who would notice?...nobody..... in that, we are totally worthless, useless, insignificant in the whole order of things..... however.... we have one redeeming quality.... we know it....

knowing our place in the whole system is so unbearably tiny, we still strive to BE something .... to KNOW more.......amazing....if I was asked if 'life' was something that was needed in the Universe, I'd have to argue that , no, it's not necessary.... the whole thing can go on just dandy without any life in it.... but nothing will KNOW that the Universe exists, so why bother with it , either?.....

as far as the EGG's 'seeming intent' on making new stars, that's just what they DO.... it's not intended to create new life, like us.... we're the biggest accident since.... well, since then...........we're neat and nifty, but we're accidental and not likely to happen again....dont'cha think?....other accidents may have happened on other worlds, but I have my doubts that they KNOW.....

yes. if you put the history of the universe on a timeline of a day man only occupies the 5 minutes before midnight. and you yourself, less than a nano second. we are all insignificant.

Isn't it nice to think so? That "the purpose" of it all is creation of life!? That the entire universe "plots" to make our wishes come true? Have you been reading too much of Paulo Coelho's writings?
Nice thought.... but it's neither original nor is it easy to answer...
This question enters in the same type of fundamental questions as "Who are we?", "Why are we here?", "What is the meaning of life?" and so on...
If you do find an answer "that holds water" let us know! You might be the next Nobel prize winner... Otherwise...

who would be interested with these creatures called human beings? were pretty stupid if only 10% of our brains is functioning.! why do i believe that theres only one entity after thousands of years that will proceed to the next dimention. and the rest live their lives over and over again. this life could only be just one memory. until they get things right? In this universe, we are all just striving for a higher conciousness. until we get to see god and see what he sees! how do i know this? I dont know! I didnt read it from anywhere! you wanna know what hell is? it is when a person cannot change. and heaven is when you can carry on with any situation. when you know how to die when you are alive. and there really isnt any aliens you know. theres us and theres the light beings. human beings are not evolving fast enough spiritually. okey thats enough info for you. bye.

Insignificant to *whom*?

Something can only be "significant" or "insignificant" *TO* someone or something. Regardless of whether you feel we are significant to some Creator ... we are certainly not insignificant to *us*.

So by definition, no, we are not insignificant.

(May I suggest you try this in the Philosophy forum.)

Nice thought, but it's hardly a new idea. About four times a day in this section alone of Yahoo Answers.
