My mom got an associates degree in God knows what from a community college, but never used it for anything. Since it was community college, she didn't really have the 'college experience' and isn't helpful at all in me applying for college. My dad never went to college, but did graduate from high school. No one else in my family (immediate or extended) has gone to college. Can I still qualify as a first generation college student? It sure feels like I am one. Can they fact check if I write that my mom doesn't have a degree, or is there a process she can go through to have her degree 'revoked' so that I can use this advantage?

I guess I should've specified before, I live in the United States and plan to attend school here.

I'm just wondering what difference this makes. Are there colleges that give more aid or are easier on admissions if you're a first generation college student?

You wouldn't be a first generation college student if mom attended college - whether she ever used the degree or not.

Consider though - is it possible to not use an education? An education is more than a a ticket to a job; it makes you a better person. If mom made decisions about your health care based on what she learned in college - she used her degree. If she managed the monthly food budget using what she learned in college - she used her degree. If she simply was better able to understand the allusion to Homer's Odyssee as she watched O' Brother Where Art Thou - then she used her degree.

The coolest thing about a good education is that (short of brain injury) it can never be taken from you. You can get fired from a job, you can even become homeless -- if you have a good education you recover from those easily. It can't be "revoked" because education is not a thing - it's a state of knowing.

It's just my opinion (and tirade) that we should never consider an education wasted because it wasn't directly applied to a job. We should never consider someone's work as not a job simply because they are unpaid or poorly paid.

That may have been some time ago. I wouldn't give up anything to any questionnaire, unless it gave some benefit up to you. Remember this, What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31. The Lord daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. - Psalm 68:19. Peace, Love and God Bless.

Different counties have different rules. Some only consider a Bachelor's degree to be "a college degree." Other include the AA.

welll sorry but technically...no, youre not a first generation college student. You may feel like one, but legally youre not because your mom attended college. Good LUck in school though, and I'm sure your family is very proud of you.

negative, she has the degree, whether she papered the bathroom or not;also I strongly recommend being completely honest. Keep in mind you are dealing with the government on FAFSA and they control financial aid.
