What is the essential role of government? I know it's to protect it's citizens but can anyone be more specific than that..? And how much power do u think the government should have?

It's summed up pretty well in the Preamble, but to me it's to provide services for the citizenry that it would either be impossible or very impractical for them to do on their own (e.g. defend the borders, police the streets, build roads and infrastructure, etc.). It should not be performing functions that the citizenry should be performing for themselves (health care, retirement).

It should only have enough power to perform the essential services and no more. The Founders put those kind of limits on the federal government when the Constitution was established, and for a good 150 years, the government lived by those restraints. And then came FDR, and we've had government shoved down our throats ever since.

If you are an American citizen and over eighteen you have the opputunity to elect key government officials. Government is basically keeps things running smoothly like not drive 80 mph in a school zone.
