After working a long day in a physical job (stretching, lifting and squatting), I had a pain in my left knee. I thought it was from working physically, since my regular job is more stationary. The pain felt like a bruise, but I don't remember doing anything that would have caused this feeling. Four days later I had a bump with a slight purplish tinge to it. The bump is somewhat painful when touched. But, it really hurts when I squat down and try to get back up. Or, when I go up or down stairs. I went to the doctor and he said that he isn't sure what it is and the x-rays came back normal. It isn't a bone spur. He is sending me to an orthopedic doctor. Any thoughts on what this could be? It is on the TOP of the patella, so it isn't Osgood-Schlatter disease. Thanks!

Could be some ruptured bursa sacs. There are bursa which act as a liquid cushions between the femur and the tibia. Since the bump you describe is at the inferior end of the femur, it could be one of those sacs which has burst. Or, you could have an embolis as well from the clogging of a blood vessel. That's phlebitis. Go see the orthopedist.

It could be a severe bruise. I smacked the top of my knee cap into the edge of a door and the welt lasted for 30 days along with the aching that has yet to stop. AVOID squatting as much as possible to allow it to heal from the impact. Hope this helps!!!
