I know this isn't the quickest answer you'll get but a really good mystery that I think you'll like is Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier. It's suspenseful and has a great story. I read it the first time when I was a freshman in high school. I've read it a couple of times since then and have seen the movie (an oldie) several times. Don't cheat though, the book is a great read. (In my opinion, the book is ALWAYS better than the movie). But, if you get a chance after you've read the book I highly recommend the movie. It stars Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine and Dame Judith Anderson. It's in black and white, but still a very good movie. I have a feeling your teacher would be impressed by this particular choice of mystery novel. Hope you give it a try.

You should read "Lorna Doone". It's quite intriguing. Also, Pearl S. Buck is interesting, if a bit dry, and I think I started reading Frank Herbert when I was that age. The Dune series is perhaps a bit too philosophical to be writing eighth-grade book reports on, though.

You’re old enough to start reading the best adult mysteries.
Agatha Christie is not difficult, and she has probably a hundred titles to choose from. Since you’re a girl, you might want to start with one of her Miss Marple mysteries.
The book trade calls her type of mystery a “cosy.” They’re not violent or hard-boiled, and the emphasis is on rational detection and not blood and gore.
Your local library will have many titles to choose from.
And once you read one of her books, I bet you'll want to read more.

I really enjoyed From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by Konigsburg, E. L. It's about two kids who hide out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where they find themselves in the middle of a suspenseful adventure that makes the headlines.

Its about this guy who becomes dead bye the deliburate actions of some other guy and the main carecter has to catch him and stuff, but theres like this evil magic sort-of guy who wants to kill HIM!

Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys series are always good reads. They are classics now, but can be found most anyplace.
