Oh, man- you know that your muscles were in good shape before? You can make sure that you do the physical therapists' exercises: a different bunch of them every other day, three times a day except on physical therapy day. Ice when swollen and sharp pain; moist heat when sore, and elevate every hour for 15 minuteswhen swollen.
After surgery, you will be numb for 24 hours, so doing any weight-bearing could injure it without knowing. Don't do anything, that day, elevating, with ice. then stay off it, using crutches to carry you, until it doesn't hurt to stand on that side. Also, do weight-bearing crutches until not limping. Just don't over-do the walking- when you start limping, it is getting sore in there.
I have fibromyalgia, so I have been chicken to do too much, as the healing takes' 10 times longer, and pain is accentuated along entire nerve- had operation 5/22/07- still slightly warm, and swells' twice size, and sore to stand on it, while doing sandwich in kitchen or bend leg while still- must move it or elevate straight- so I don't do exercises on days off, as it just hurts' worse and was swelling to 3 times size.
I had meniscus tear, bakers' cyst, synovial fluid splashed all over (plica) and arthritic chondrial changes and cartilage all over it bunched up.

arthroscopic? at least a couple months to get semi back in shape. make sure to do the therapy excersises you're given. it really does help with recovery. since you are into martial arts, it may not take as long to get all the way back since you are more conditioned than average. just don't over do it.
