Okay, I'm sure like a bagillion pplz posted this, but does "lol" mean "laugh out loud" or "lots of love?" I've alwayz used it for laugh out loud, but they were talking about it today on the radio, and it made me wonder. (Yes, Big D & Bubba, if u're reading this, I was listening 2 u).

Just reading the question makes my bones creak.

Back in the old days, before the internet involved browsers and html, there used to be a network of threaded conversations called usenet. In those days, only secretaries typed well, and few of the participants had the keyboard skills that are more common today. Very quickly, a lexicon of abbreviations came into being. Lol was one of the first, followed very quickly by rotfl, rotflamao, and the whole works.

Lol was laughing out loud, and has always meant that to me, but lately I have been corresponding with a woman who uses it as a term of endearment, which I find puzzling. Neither laughing out loud nor lots of love really work and I haven't asked her what it means to her--I so hate to appear as clueless as I really am.

We men are like that.

I always thought it was laugh out loud. Then one day a friend (not an acquaintance) was getting a message from the bf and it was "lots of love" (or they thought it was and now they have been dumped big time). Then I thought I might be wrong with laugh out loud. I never forward an email unless I LOL. That's what I think...

PS: The spell checker did not like LOL at all...
