The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.
I only recommend buying NOD32 (advanced users) or Kaspersky. It has been proven these products are better than the best sellers (Norton and McAfee):

The key is to stay off twilight sites.
It's a myth that there is a "best" Antivirus.
Faked stats are always best to advertise
contemporary spotlights. Remember all the
benchmarks humbug with "unnatural" conditions.
You are safe with one the three best freeware proggies
unless you really try to stress it by suicidal surf behaviour.
For onetime scans McAfee's free Stinger is still first choice.
Antivir Personal Edition Classic 7.0.4
AVG Anti Virus Free 7.5.412

Your best bet is to use either AVG antivirus (free version for home use) or Avast! antivirus. Both are effective against most viruses. Spyware is a more common problem and is often ignored. If too much accumulates, your system will slow down. Spybot is a good tool that removes most spyware. It is also free. I would not recommend Norton Antivirus because it chews up computer resources and also generates a large number of false alarms (treats normal activity as virus or illegal computer activity).
Here are the links to download the software you will need
AVG:

or Avast! :

and for spyware, Spybot:

I have used 5 different antivirus and security programs and I think that ZoneAlarm is by far the best. It has done a good job of catching and removing potential hazards and doesn't seem to use up as many resources as some of the other programs. I just got a 3-computer license for a year for $50.
This is a good resource to compare options -- http://www.e-wisdom.com/internet_service/antivirus.html
I've used ZoneAlarm now for about 3 months and so far I highly recommend it.

I've been using Panda Security for a couple years now, and it seems to work well. It has the antivirus, firewall, and spyware protection, among other things. Best thing to do is read the articles from Consumer Reports magazine. It's how I found Panda. You can go to the library and read some of the back issues.

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!
Download here:
http://www.free-av.com/
BTW, Avoid the free, version of an anti-virus called AVG, it is wildly popular, but it has horrible virus detection capibilities.
Enjoy!

I have had Panda Antivirus for several years, and I have never had problems. PC magazines always give them the highest marks - 5 stars. You can check that out for yourself on their website. I was using Norton several years ago, but my PC was having a few problems so I switched. I think just the antivirus from Panda is less than $40 a year. I'm not too sure. I use the Security Suite which has firewall, antispyware, antispam, anti-everything. I pay $70 a year for the updates, but to me it's worth it. I surf the Internet totally worry free. Anyways, you can get a free scan at their website, and it will clean your PC of any problems that it finds. When I first installed Panda on my PC, it found a few trojans, viruses, and tons of spyware. I'm sure they'll find lots of stuff on your PC and clean it up for you.

The only antivirus programs you can buy in stores are Norton Anti-Virus and McAfee.
But neither one of them is worth a damn. That's sort've like giving a starving baby a pacifier, instead of putting the baby to Mama's teat.
If you can't be bothered to hire an 8-year-old kid to install a effective anti-virus program AVG or Avast for you, please PERMANENTLY disconnect your computer from the internet, so the rest of us don't have to deal with it. Computers running McAfee or Norton are the equivalent of a syphilitic whore - a public hazard that should be dealt with severely.
