All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, 1943-1954.

Surely you've seen the movie "A League Of Their Own", inspired by this league!

The league was called the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. A great movie called "A League of Their Own" was made about it. A good movie actually with Madonna and Tom Hanks.

The Racine Belles was one of the teams. Phillip Wrigley is one of the men who started the league with some business men during the war. You may know Mr. Wrigley a little bit better as the guy who was the GUM KING or who's name is on Wrigley Field.

Google search it and there is a ton of great info:

The league existed from 1943-1954. The Racine Belles did indeed win the first championship but it was not against the Rockford Peaches like in the movie. It was against the Kenosha Comets. The league started with 4 teams and but expanded and at its peak was up to 10 teams. In its last season however it was back to 5 teams. In the first season along with the Racine Belles and Kenosha Comets was the Rockford Peaches and the South Bend Blue Sox. The only 2 teams to be in the league for all 12 years were the Rockford Peaches and the South Bend Blue Sox. However, None of the players from the movie were real people.

There have been many leagues, professional and otherwise, besides the one mentioned by everyone so far. Many leagues still exist for women today.
