So the Chargers lose a game to New England Patriots, one of the best teams, if not the best team, in the league, and all of a sudden, Norv Turner is the worst head coach ever? wow, I'd have to disagree with you there, there are plenty of crappy coaches out there, and I think you're just overreacting.

It's only the second game of the season. He's still getting used to the way the Chargers play. Marty didn't instantly start out on top in his first season, so don't expect Norv Turner to. Also, one game does not make or break a coach's ability. The Patriots have an amazing defense, an even more amazing quarterback, and an awesome group of recievers. I don't blame them for losing. It wasn't a vengeance for last year's playoff lost, it was just a more emotional season game.

It is like you said, Norv is a great offensive coordinator. He is wonderful at X's and O's, but being a head coach is so much more than that. He has a hard time relaying his message to all of his players on both sides of the ball. He is a consumate player's coach and will not get in a guy's face if he has to.
As for the worst, I would say that goes to either Rich Kotite or Ray Handley. Handley took over the NY Giants after Parcells left. He mamanaged to tear down a franchise that was a perennial winner in just two seasons. His Giants teams were not good at anything, offense or defense. Since he has left, it took Dan Reeves and Jim Fassel to right that ship and get them winning again.
As for Kotite, his was a terrible story in that he took down two franchises. First he took over a Philadelphia team that was stocked with talent on offense and defense. He had Randall Cunningham, Keith Byars, Clyde Simmons, Fred Barnett, Eric Allen, and a whole list of players that could have and would have dominated in a tough NFC had Kotite had the know how to run a team. But he squandered every bit of it, then cracked up in Philadelphia when the media got to him (funny since he used the media and the GM's ear to get Buddy Ryan fired) and was fired.
Then he got a second shot in New York with the Jets. There he pushed for the questionable signing of high priced free agents like Neil O'Donnell. He was supposed to turn the Jets around and make them a playoff team. He was going to show the world that Philadelphia was a fluke and New York was going to be at the top under his guidance. Instead they wound up at the top of the 1996 draft and got Keyshawn Johnson. The Jets had to bring in Bill Parcells to fix his mess. I will say one thing he was good at though. Every single player on those teams could do whatever they wanted in public because Kotite became the lightning rod for the local media.

Oh no, not ever. Did you remember what Gunther Cunningham did to a great Chiefs team in the late 90s when he took over for Marty? Norv is terrible, but not the worst. I think I'd still take him over that jackass Herm thats running the show in KC now.

The man has a Superbowl ring. He can hardly be called the worse coach ever for that reason alone.
Besides, I can think of dozens of head coaches that were far worse than him. Remember how abysmal Art Shell was when he coached the Raiders last year? Remember how terrible the Chargers were when Kevin Gilbride coached them about a decade ago? The list goes on and on.

He's not the worst, but Marty was a better coach. Anyone who got The Browns within a play of The Superbowl two years straight, may be the greatest coach ever! Cleveland and San Diego both were very dumb for letting him go!

Norv is not terrible, he has a terrible secondary and an even worse quaterback. Ladainian Tomlinson can only do so much and Antonio Gates needs balls thrown his way. Also, Shawne Merriman can't be on every tackle aaong with Shawn Williams. This team needs major work at quaterback and in the secondary, not the coaching.

I couldn't agree more. Norv Turner was not the right fit for the Chargers. SD goes 8-8 this year.
