If you mean like a Goldwater Republican, no. If you mean like a leader, too soon to tell.
I think Fred Thompson is going to disappoint people. As he opens his mouth, it'll be evident he is no Ronald Reagan.

I assume by "true Republican" you mean conservative. Well, we seem to be a little short of true conservative candidates. What is worse is that the only Republican candidate that has the moxie to go after Hillary is Rudy and he is seriously flawed.

Fred Thompson is proving to be one big disappointment. He is already tripping over his own words while being interviewed by friendly conservative hosts like Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham. He just has not inspired much enthusiasm in me.

No, there aren't any true republicans and hasn't been for years. Reagan claimed to be a conservative who wanted to cut spending and cut taxes. Yet he spent more than any other president in history....and by a huge amount. And while he did cut taxes for the wealthy....he later raised them in the biggest tax increases in U.S. history up to that point. Bush Sr. did the same. Bush Jr. cut taxes (again for the wealthy) but also increased spending thru the roof. Now republicans simply scream about family values - all the while putting out candidates who are morally bankrupt. Alcoholics, adulterers, guys who divorce and marry women 24 years younger than themselves.

I think if there is a party that has gone missing, it is the Democrats. As the DNC has moved Left, the Republicans have embraced greater populations of Americans who seem to be united by one sentiment: No socialism.

To answer: The candidates are all Republicans who are running as Republicans. The beauty is, we all get to vote.

Ron Paul.
He is the only Pre-Reagan Republican running.

What is a "true Republican?" What is a "true Democrat?"

I think most of the Republicans are not in name only. Rudy is too liberal. Paul is a libertarian, in spite of the fact that he changed parties to run.

GO FRED!

Newt Gingrich, he recognizes a needed plan pattern for change, as does Fred Thompson -- Quite frankly, I'd like to see Fred and Newt for 08, but a Huckabee/Newt team sounds really good.

As for being a true conservative and smaller government it would be Ron Paul, unfortunately people can't get by the getting rid of IRS, and cia and ending the war bit because they don't understand why.
