Hello. I am a Certified Master Gardener. In college, Horticulture was my major. I have been employed in a plant nursery. Additionally, I work with plants as a volunteer at my local University Botanic Gardens.

You need to take a softwood tip cutting. Just prune off the freshest growth end of a branch----a tip about two inches long.

Using a high-quality potting soil such as Scott's Professional or Kellogg's, dip one inch of the cut end into Rooting Hormone. This will protect the cutting from many soil-borne fungi, etc., and will assist in the development of roots.

Fill 6-inch pots with soil, and place one cutting in the center of the pot, after it has been dipped in Rooting Hormone.

Place the cuttings in indirect light and water every other day. Water the soil, not the cutting. Crepe myrtles are prone to mildews.

When the cutting have grown to a height of about 8 inches, they can be transplanted into the ground.

Crepe myrtles are one of my favorite trees.

I sincerely hope this information helps you.

The best of luck with your cuttings.

PAMELA J.

Take softwood cuttings about 6 inches long in mid to late Spring. You can use scissors if you don't have a set of pruners. Strip all but the top three or four leaves off. Place in some moistened potting soil or peat/perlite mix and keep moist in a dappled shaded area, like under some pine trees. You may want to use a spray bottle the first few days, spraying the leaves to keep them from losing moisture while the cuttings adapt to absorbing moisture through the stem that is in the soil. The cuttings should root in about 4 -6 weeks. Let them grow in the pot until fall and then plant them into a bed to grow for a year and then they will be ready to plant out into your desired location.
