93 Kawasaki Bayou 220, it seems that the fuel is going the wrong way, into the airbox instead of into the cylinder. what could be causing this?

Tight or leaking "intake valve".
If the valve doesn't seal closed, the compression of the engine will blow the fuel back through the intake manifold.
Check the valve adjustment, before doing any carb work.

I think it may have a vacuum fuel pump and the diaphragm has gone bad so fuel flows directly into intake tract. need someone with relevant experience of this vehicle to look it over

You have a bad or stuck float in the carb.
