The quarterback has an earpiece so He can get signals in from the coaches in the booth. There can only be one person on the field who has communications with the sidelines at one time.
If a backup is brought in to play a receiver then to throw a pass, he cannot have communications with the sideline. It's basically a way so the referees know who has communications ability.

It means they have a microphone to the coach in their helmet. You are only allowed to have one person with a microphone in their helmet on the field at a time.

Does this never end? Seems no one reads the previous questions. Maybe Answers staff could put a list of questions that have been previously asked on the site. But it would probably take pages and pages.

It's so they know how to put the helmet on. Sticker in the back, cage in the front. You'd be surprised at how many of them get confused about that.
