The Great Lakes are important because they collect and distribute a LOT of fresh water--more than any other single water system in the world.

So when the smart kids in Silicon Valley finally get off their duffs and refine a renewable free source of energy so that fossil fuels are history, water will become the new hot commodity and the US and Canada will face invasion for control of the Great Lakes . . . .
